What type of facilities do you have for rentals?
- Our main hall is a circular room which we refer to as the tank. In this room we hold our general meetings, our monthly dinner and breakfast, and bingo is held here every Friday night. The vast majority of all rentals are held in the tank.
- We do have a smaller room – our Ladies Auxiliary room – for smaller venues if needed.
How many guests can we invite?
- The tank has a seating capacity for two-hundred (200) persons. The Ladies Auxiliary room can seat forty (40) persons.
How long can we rent the facilities?
- Rentals are based on five, six or seven hours; five hours being a minimum.
What is the earliest we can start our event and what time do we have to be out?
- Hours can start as early as noon and go as late as twelve- midnight. The Post is in a residential neighborhood and the City of Hawthorne regulates our hours for the latest time we can keep the event going.
How much do you charge for a rental?
- The cost of the rental depends on what type of rental is requested. We base our rentals on four rate structures: a VFW member rate; a non-member rate; a Sweet 16 and Quinceanera member rate; and a Sweet 16 and Quinceanera non-member rate. The following examples are based on a non-member rental in the main hall using the five hour minimum:
- A typical rental for a birthday party, wedding reception, baby shower, retirement party, family reunion, banquet, etc. would start at $600.00.
- A rental for a Sweet 16 or Quinceanera would start at $700.00.
- The rates for a six or seven hour rental are higher.
- A non-member rental for the Ladies Auxiliary room start at $150.00.
Are there additional charges for extras?
- Yes, depending on which type of rental is requested and what the needs are of the renter.
- Guards - Guards are based on one guard per seventy-five guests. (Necessity of a guard would be evaluated for which type of rental is requested.)
- All Sweet 16's and Quinceanera events REQUIRE a minimum of three guards.
- If our Auxiliary room is requested in addition to the main hall.
- If our kitchen facilities are requested. If the kitchen is requested, the Auxiliary room has to be included in the rental. Reason for this is: persons must pass through the Auxiliary room to enter the kitchen; this would prohibit the Post from renting the Auxiliary room on the same date.
- If the renter needs the use of a bartender and a waitress to serve alcohol.
Do you cater events?
- No. However, we do have a full kitchen available for heating and warming of food only. We have had, on occasions, personnel from the Post who have been asked to cater special events, and with much success. Renters would have to inquire about personnel being available for such an occasion. There would be a negotiated fee for their service.
Is there a security deposit?
- Yes. There is a refundable damage fee of $250.00 to $500.00, depending on the rental. The fee is fully refunded if there is no damage incurred by the facility.
- Violations of some house rules would necessitate a deduction from the damage fee.
Can we have a DJ or live music?
- Yes, by all means. We have a large stage that can accommodate either a DJ or small band.
- We do ask our renters to turn down their music at 10:00pm to keep in line with city noise ordinances.
Can we decorate?
- Yes, but with some restrictions. We do not allow confetti, silly string, candles or any fire-based light.
- We allow you to use only tape or push-pins to attach decorations to the walls. These decorations should be light in weight.
What about parking – do we have to park on a street?
- We have a spacious parking lot for sixty-five (65) vehicles.
What dates are available for rentals?
- We do have some standing rentals during the week but most weekends are open. Our past events indicate the majority of rentals were on a Saturday night. It is best to call or stop by the Post to check on a particular date. Our number is 310-679-7472. Our doors open at noon Monday thru Friday; at 10:00am Saturday and Sunday.
We would encourage you to stop by the Post and check out our facility. Please ask for either Betty or Susie (our bartenders) or even our building manager, Bob Steinhauer, and they will gladly show you what we have to offer. They can also tell you if a certain date you are looking at is available. With the information you supply them they can sit down with you and work up a rental proposal with all pricing.
We hope we can fulfill your needs with our facilities and make it a memorable event. The Post is a landmark here in Hawthorne . . . we're sitting in a converted water tank . . . and have been at the 'Top of the Hill' since 1931!
